Dedicated Server

I finally turned off my last server at EV1 last week. What a relief! I was with EV1 for over 3 years and very happy with them. I’d still be with them if they had offered more RAID systems with Dual Core chips. Some of you may remember I actually drove 15 hours to Houston, TX for EV1’s 5th birthday party. It was one of the coolest trips I’ve been on and won’t forget it any time soon.

But now, I’m with SoftLayer. I moved to them in September and have been very impressed with the speed, reliability, support, and overall service I have received. They have really taken unmanaged hosting to the next level. Offering a new take on the private network concept and an extremely fast and reliable set of backbone connections has actually boosted my bottom line. Getting my web pages to visitors faster and more reliably has increased my earnings significantly.

While I haven’t needed to upgrade yet. I’m looking forward to the time when I need to upgrade my servers as SoftLayer has built their servers with motherboards that support single core, dual core, and quad core processors. When the time comes, they’ll just drop in new chips and another stick of RAM. Minimal downtime and none of the hassle of migrating to a new server. Awesome!

I have a Dual Opteron 240 with 3GB of RAM and 3×73GB 10k RPM SCSI HDD in RAID 5. Paying $399/mo, just $100 more than I was with EV1 for slower drives and no RAID.
